RE: Linux marches on

Maybe it’s not fair to compare media attention given to Linux vs other platforms. But, what other OS has media analysts tracking developer actions in weekly articles?? Does anyone know what the lead engineer at Sun decided to include in solaris 10.x? or the lead Apple engineer for the next OSX platform?, or the windows developer for the latest Vista feature?? No. But, because Linux is “open”, analysts almost feel like they’re part of the team…and they love to promote the latest Linux code fix….however obscure it is. A double standard without a doubt…but not unexpected. Linux is the darling of the tech industry analysts for the next 1 – 2 years…and then reality will hit. And it won’t be pretty.

It’s easy to lose track of what’s going on with Linux. That’s due in part to the almost total lack of marketing hype. The kernel crew, led by Linus Torvalds, just keeps working away quietly in the background. Red Hat…
